Periodontics

The oral cavity is a complex network of tissues, nerves and bone to keep our dentition healthy and strong. The periodontium is the system of tissues that surround the tooth and holds it in place in our jawbone. It is composed of the alveolar bone (in which the roots of our teeth sit in), cementum, gingiva (gums) and the periodontal ligament.

Periodontitis

The part of the mouth called the periodontium can be affected by certain diseases that the dentists at Centre Dentaire NP are able to treat.

Watch out for Periodontal Diseases!

Periodontal diseases are responsible for approximately 70% of teeth loss in adults. The disease is predominantly caused by an accumulation of plaque and/or tartar which contain a various amount of bacteria that attack the gums causing gingivitis, or in more severe cases, periodontitis.

Gingivitis: it is the inflammation of the gingiva, a reversible condition and generally easy to treat and heal as the treatment is fairly quick.

  • Symptoms: red and inflamed gums, bleeding when brushing and/or flossing your teeth.
  • Possible treatment(s): A dental cleaning of your teeth by the dental hygienist. Following your dental cleaning, it is important to follow the instructions of your dentist and dental hygienist to ensure good dental hygiene.

Periodontitis: This is the inflammation and infection of the gums and tissues that make up the periodontium. It is the consequence of the buildup of an assortment of bacteria in the gums. When left untreated, the bacteria can create irreversible destruction of the alveolar bone and cause the loss of teeth.

  • Symptoms: Chronic bad breath, spontaneous bleeding of the gums, loose teeth, recession of the gingiva (loosening of the teeth), etc.
  • Possible treatment(s): A deep cleaning of the teeth and their roots (root planning), gum grafting and/or antibiotic treatments.

Prevent Periodontal Diseases

In order to counter any oral cavity diseases and their consequences, the dental professionals at Centre dentaire NP will highly recommend good oral hygiene habits:

  • Avoid smoking (all kinds)
  • Maintain a well balanced diet, low in processed sugars and high in vitamins and minerals
  • Have good oral hygiene habits such as brushing and flossing your teeth

It is also important to have regular dental professional examinations and cleanings. Periodontal diseases can be detected quickly and you will avoid future complications. Our team of dental hygienists are highly trained to ensure that you and your oral cavity are in great condition!

Gum Graft

Certain conditions and/or habits can cause gingival recessions (gum recessions) exposing the root. In order to treat this condition, your dentist will recommend a gum graft to give it back its height and thickness. With this minor dental surgery it is possible to return your oral health to its best and it will ensure that your teeth are as healthy as they can be.
