The oral cavity is a complex network of tissues, nerves and bone to keep our dentition healthy and strong. The periodontium is the system of tissues that surround the tooth and holds it in place in our jawbone. It is composed of the alveolar bone (in which the roots of our teeth sit in), cementum, gingiva (gums) and the periodontal ligament.

Periodontitis
As these are living tissues in our mouth, they can be affected in a variety of ways and the dentists at Centre dentaire NP, your dental clinic in Kirkland in the West Island, can help treat any periodontal diseases.
Periodontal diseases are responsible for approximately 70% of teeth loss for adults. The disease is dominantly caused by an accumulation of plaque and/or tartar. Plaque and/or tartar contain a various amount of bacteria which attach the gingiva causing gingivitis. In the severe cases, the bacteria attack the periodontium leading to periodontitis.
Gingivitis: it is the inflammation of the gingiva, a reversible condition and generally easy to treat and heal as the treatment is fairly quick.
-Symptoms: red and inflamed gingiva, bleeding when brushing and/or flossing your teeth.
-Possible treatment(s): A dental cleaning of your teeth by the dental hygienist. Following your dental cleaning, it is important to follow the instructions of your dentist and dental hygienist to ensure good dental hygiene.
Periodontitis: It is the inflammation and infection of the components that make up the periodontium. Periodontitis is the consequence of the buildup of an assortment of bacteria in the gingiva. When this is not treated the bacteria can create irreversible destruction of the alveolar bone and cause the loss of teeth.
-Symptoms: Chronic bad breath, spontaneous bleeding of the gingiva, mobile dentition, recession of the gingiva etc.
-Treatment(s) possible: A deep gum and root cleaning (curettage), gum graft and/or antibiotic treatments.
